Purchasing Information for the Archaeological Sites Index (ARCHI)
The following data is available from Archaeology UK:
ARCHI Professional via the Internet
ARCHI Professional on CD-ROM
The Professional version of ARCHI (the Archaeological Sites Index) contains details of sites only mentioned in rare books and archaeological reports / surveys which cannot be found outside specialist libraries.
The internet version of ARCHI also operates as a geo-referenced bibliography of the archaeological literature relevant to British Archaeology. Its very nature facilitates a search of the literature in a geographic context thus providing students and academics alike with a means to overcome the limitations of the traditional keyword approach to retrieval of geographically based information.
By subscribing to ARCHI you automatically gain quick and easy access to information on more than 115,000 UK archaeological sites. Each record includes the national grid reference (co-ordinate) of more than 9000 Iron Age sites, 18,800 Roman sites, more than 4000 Saxon sites, 21,500 medieval sites and many, many more ancient and miscellaneous sites.
Further, a bibliographic source for nearly every record is provided along with direct links to an aerial photograph and a local road map showing the position of the site.
Note that public access to this database is not available anywhere else.
Gaining Internet access to ARCHI Professional
If you purchase all four volumes (Volume V) of ARCHI on CD-ROM you will also be able to gain access to the internet version of ARCHI for one year for free.
